Ethan J. Ung

Ethan J. Ung is a patent attorney and litigator whose practice focuses primarily on intellectual property (IP) matters. He guides clients through prosecuting and enforcing their rights in patents, trademarks, copyrights, and other related areas. His services include offering clearance opinions, conducting IP audits and due diligence, and counseling entrepreneurs, business owners, and startups on various IP issues.
As outside counsel, Ethan works with several startup biotechnology companies, guiding them through the legal intricacies of their innovative work. These companies are at the forefront of developing stem cell technologies for regenerative medicine, human fertility, and cosmetics. He also advises entrepreneurs and innovators in the mechanical arts, particularly those developing new technologies in medical devices, computer-implemented technologies, and software inventions. Ethan has also served as General Counsel to a startup Biotech dedicated to discovering new chemical entities for treating advanced and metastatic cancers.
Ethan’s litigation experience covers a range of legal matters, advising national and multinational corporations on risk management and complex disputes, including claims of product liability, third-party liability, insurance coverage or fraud analysis, and representing clients in matters involving trademark infringement, anti-counterfeiting, false advertising, and unfair competition.
A former trial attorney at a major personal property and casualty insurer, Ethan has handled all phases of litigation from inception through case resolution to verdict in bench and jury trials. As lead attorney overseeing a portfolio of litigation matters, Ethan has represented clients in hearings, mediations, and arbitrations.
A biochemist before law school, Ethan is a former scientist, co-inventor, and co-author of numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications. Ethan has extensive biomedical research experience, studying the defense mechanisms of viruses, and was a Biology Team leader directing preclinical cancer drug discovery at one of the world’s premier pharmaceutical companies. Ethan is intimately familiar with the preclinical and clinical development of pharmaceuticals, licensing agreements, supply agreements, and collaboration and co-promotion agreements.
While working in the pharmaceutical industry, Ethan was recognized for his outstanding research, innovation, teamwork, and leadership—qualities that he continues to apply in his legal practice to deliver the best possible outcome for his clients.
Ethan is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) and Co-Chair of the Legal Development Subcommittee of the Chemical Practice Committee. He is also a member of the AIPLA’s newly formed Artificial Intelligence Task Force.
