Evan Goldstein | Guest Speaker at UConn Law School
On April 8, 2021, Attorney Evan Goldstein, a principal at Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. (“UKS”) guest lectured via Zoom at UConn Law School. Attorney Goldstein spoke to law students in the Law 7565 Legal Profession class regarding diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. This UConn Law School class offers an examination of the status and function of the legal profession and of the importance of professional responsibility to the legal profession, to the administration of justice, and to society; the problems faced by the practicing lawyer and the standards he or she should apply in their solution, as well as the duties of the attorney to his or her client, to other lawyers and to the court, as functions of the adversary system.
Attorney Goldstein discussed with the law students how UKS values diversity and inclusiveness within the firm and its commitment to promoting these values within the legal profession and the community at large. Attorney Goldstein spoke to the law students about how UKS became an inaugural signatory to the CBA Diversity and Inclusion Pledge and how UKS initiated a statewide collaborative pipeline program called the CBA Future of Legal Profession Scholars Program. Attorney Goldstein discussed how this pipeline program aims to address the lack of representation in the legal field and is attempting to increase the pipeline of diverse talent that enters the legal profession in Connecticut. As part of this program, participants receive a scholarship to take an LSAT preparation course and participate in events and programs to prepare them for their law school journey and engage them with the Connecticut legal community. Lastly, Attorney Goldstein discussed with the law students how attorneys at UKS volunteer as mentors in the Lawyers for Collaborative Mentoring program which offers internships to diverse college students interested in attending law school and maybe one day becoming lawyers.
